Cheaper car hire excess insurance.

When renting a car we found it was a lot cheaper to buy excess insurance cover with Questor than directly from the hire company. Europe cover £2.49 a day or £39 a year. https://www.questor-insurance.co.uk/

It’s not April 1st

The Independent and other UK press has picked up on this story from Mojacar, open the link or read it below

POSTCARD FROM MOJACAR
No loud heel-clacking in private properties or domino-playing, dice-playing and loud conversations in the outdoor terraces of bars. According to the Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the coastal resort of Mojacar will soon declare all-out war on civic noise, and these are just a few of the possible bans, with the very worst offences receiving fines of €3,000.

Spain has a well-earned reputation for being one of the noisiest countries on the planet, but that could be about to change – in Mojacar at least. Already, El Mundo says, a recent ban on disco music in beach bars means only background music is apparently now acceptable. And next on the black list, subject to a town hall debate later this week, could be “running, jumping, skating and taconear [stomping around a flat in noisy heels]” in private homes.

And so the list goes on: singing, playing dice or dominos, shouting or talking “excessively loudly” could all be barred from the outdoor terraces of bars and cafés. As for “making noise in general… when the levels are unacceptable”, that gets the thumbs down, too.

A town hall authority was quoted in El Mundo as saying the aim was merely to keep the peace while also maintaining “a degree of common sense”. The opposition have allegedly claimed such measures are  possibly anti-constitutional, and could limit the town’s  tourist appeal.

Or as one councillor reportedly put it: “If these [measures] were applied all the way along the Mediterranean coast, it would turn it into a cemetery.”

RVP

Andrew has been to stay, again, with his parents and couldn’t wait to show me his prize possession.

The story behind this is that he is a Man Utd fan and I for my sins an Arsenal fan, last summer his team stole our best player. When he went to see utd he bought a scarf with RVP on it which he thought we should wear!

RIP…RVP

Dia de la Vieja (Day of the old lady)

This is a very local fiesta celebrated around Mojacar, Villaricos and Vera. It takes place during lent on a Thursday, 3 weeks before Holy Thursday.

Families head off to the campo in the afternoon for a picnic, Later on there are piñata’s of old ladies placed in the middle of the country and everyone begins to throw rocks at them.  Eventually the old lady is demolished and sweets breaks out from the inside and the children all run to grab them.  And that is Día de la Vieja.  Now aside from those wonderful things, I have no idea how this day became and why it is only celebrated in our area.  Most people have probably never heard of it.

A theory is that it provides light relief for people who are observing lent.

Even if you miss the event you always know when it has occurred just by seeing the rubbish that has been left behind in true Spanish style !!!

Golf in Vera Almeria area.

Golf is very popular in this area with 5 courses to choose from. The beauty of staying at Finca Arboleda is that you aren’t committed to playing at the same course every time. The golf page has been updated but the problem is course information is hidden amongst information about holidays and villa sales.

You can see them here  http://www.fincaarboleda.com/property.html or better still why not pop out for a weeks holiday, get a feel for the area and decide for yourselves.

Torre Bahia

We made a rare visit to Mojacar yesterday for a group lunch with friends. It was a glorious sunny day and we had a good lunch.

Torre Bahia is a traditional long established family restaurant and we had menu del dia for around 10 euros. My starter, crispy fried mushrooms, was a little disappointing but the chicken breast in mushroom sauce that I had for the main was perfect, well cooked and moist it was followed by a chocolate mousse and coffee, no brandy as I was driving!. Everyone was happy with the food, service and atmosphere so it is recommenced and I’m sure we will return.

Vegetarians need to be aware that the vegetable soup contained chicken and pancetta! As someone who has been served soup of the day containing trifle I didn’t see this as a problem

Almazara restaurant at Cortijo Grande

We had a very nice lunch here. The restaurant is the club house for the golf course and is in a setting that is hard to beat. The owners were extremely friendly and the home cooked food very good.

Well worth a visit if you in the area.
